Blog Name Change

Today I decided it was time to change the name of my blog. I'm not 33 anymore, I use my blog mostly for publishing reviews of all the books I read, I am a reference librarian, my favorite color is periwinkle blue, I love the Librarian in Black blog, and my first half a dozen blog name ideas were already taken, so..."Librarian in Periwinkle" it is! What do you think? Good name? Or do you have a better idea? I'm open to suggestions!

Thanks for reading, everyone!

Change in Blog Theme

In case you missed it with my last post (earlier today), I've decided to keep going with my blog now that I've finished the Discover 2.0 tasks. Since I am not likely to remember to blog about my life--nor do I particularly want to share everything with the world--I'm going to post my reviews of what I'm reading--which I'm perfectly happy to share with the world. :) These are also found on my Goodreads account as well.

I tend to read mostly genre fiction, but lately I've been branching out into some non-fiction as well. With a few odds and ends thrown in. We'll see how it goes. I'll try this for a while and then reevaluate somewhere down the line.

One caveat, though: people are welcome to comment, as long as everyone realizes that I may or may not notice soon enough to make any sort of timely response. I'll try, but no promises!

Technorati...nope, not a fan

Sorry, but I do not understand how or why I should be using Technorati. For this section of our Discover 2.0 project we were supposed to watch the video/take the tour & play around with the Percolating & Popular features. Problem is, I can't figure out how to navigate their site without going back to the FVRL Discover 2.0 blog and clicking the links. In other words, I haven't figured out how to go anywhere directly & on purpose. Plus, it's kind of boring. Maybe that's the frustration talking.

I did eventually sort of figure out how to do the Advanced Search to search for "Learning 2.0" in the tags & in the posts. (Got different results with some overlap.) Never figured out how to search the blog directory. Couldn't even find the directory except as it was linked from the blog post that's linked from the FVRL blog. Not useful to me! I did watch that video embedded in the 2006 blog post (the one linked from the FVRL blog). Tiny screen, zooming around doing...I don't even remember what. And it seems like they've changed their interface since the time they made the video, because it looks totally different to me. Or else I was in the wrong spot? I don't know. I seriously doubt I'll be using this in the future. Not unless someone comes up with a better explanation for why or how I should.

Did I just miss something? Something obvious or useful that my brain is too tired to see right now?

More on RSS feeds

I've now subscribed to a "lucky" 13 RSS feeds for my Bloglines account. When I am supposed to have time to read all the new posts, I haven't yet figured out. But at least they are there and waiting for me.

I tried both ways to find feeds to add--I went directly to some sites and I used links from Bloglines and from the LISwiki to locate others. I'm not a huge fan of using the LISwiki, as it turns out, because it's just one huge long list with very little information on each one, and I didn't have the patience to try out every single link to see if it was something I wanted to read. Then again, it did gather a bazillion blogs in one place, which is good when you're like me and not aware of the existence of most of them so can't go directly to very many.

I can see how it would be useful for library websites to have RSS feeds, though. Particularly from their Events pages so that information could be pushed to patrons who subscribe to their library's feed. Maybe it could increase awareness of library programs and therefore boost attendance. At least with the younger crowd. Maybe not so much the average senior citizen. I can't see my mom using the internet in any form to get her library event information. But I think RSS has great potential for teens and gen-Xers like me. And whatever we're now calling the generation between the two. (Or are today's teens still part of the Gen-Y/Millenials?)

What was that blog again? Oh, wait! I use RSS feeds!

I am one of those people who never has the time to keep current with all the latest blog posts. I don't know how some people manage it, but I sure haven't discovered their miracle secret to staying up to date. At least now, with RSS feeds coming to my Bloglines account (and the Google Reader account I already had), I no longer have to remember exactly which blogs and sites I'm behind in reading. RSS brings me that information! So although it hasn't revolutionized my world, it has at least eliminated a few things off the impossibly long list of things I'm trying to remember at any given moment. Which is an improvement, I guess. Freed up some brain space for other information to forget repeatedly. And every once in a while I do remember to login and check the blogs I like reading, so having the RSS feeds collected in one (OK, two) place(s) is quite handy. I'm a convert.
